Frequently Asked Questions

  • When should I see a Chiropodist?

You can see a Chiropodist anytime you have a foot or ankle concern. We provide a variety of options for treatment, including injury management, Foot care, surgical and Orthotic management. Many people also come regularly to our clinic for preventative Foot care. There are systemic disorders that require careful monitoring of the feet.

  • What is a Chiropodist?

A Chiropodist is a regulated, primary foot health care professional. We are licensed to assess, treat, and manage disorders of the foot, ankle and leg. Chiropodists and Podiatrists are the highest trained foot specialists practicing in Ontario. The Chiropody specialty is defined, in the Regulated Health Professions Act (R.H.P.A.) under the Chiropody Act 1991, as Chiropody being the treatment and prevention of diseases, disorders or dysfunctions of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic or palliative means. Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only health professionals who are exclusively trained to assess and treat foot problems.

Early detection of many foot problems can prevent more serious complications from developing.

  • Do I need a referral from a doctor?

Referrals are not necessary though many physicians do refer their patients to us. Please call the clinic directly for an appointment.

  • What should I do before my first appointment?

Your first visit allows us to get to know you and your feet better. By understanding the root cause of your foot problem, we will come up with a treatment plan that is specific to you. As a new patient, please arrive 5 minutes early to fill out forms. Please bring: your usual footwear plus any Orthotics, foot or ankle braces you may have, or any recent x-rays of your feet or legs. Please also be prepared to share information about any other medical concerns or medications you are taking.

  • Is my treatment covered by OHIP?

No, chiropody treatments are not OHIP eligible. However, like dental care , most extended health and workplace insurance plans reimburse for chiropody treatments. ODSP, WSIB, Social Services, and Veterans Affairs may cover Chiropody treatments as well. Insurance receipts are provided.

  • How do you clean your instruments?

All Chiropodists must adhere to strict infection control guidelines set out by the College of Chiropodists. We use steam sterilization (autoclave) and test daily to provide the highest level of disinfection of all our foot and nail instruments.

  • Why should I see a Chiropodist for Orthotics?

Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only health professionals who are exclusively trained to assess and treat foot problems. Early detection of many foot problems can prevent more serious complications from developing.

A Chiropodist will provide a complete examination of your foot. For custom Orthotics, the Chiropodist will carefully assess your feet through a Biomechanical Assessment and Gait Analysis. A plaster cast will be taken of your feet, capturing the uncompensated foot, and creating a custom orthotic that will provide optimal control of the foot during all activities.

Chiropodists are Primary Care providers for Orthotics.
